I have followed Facebook groups that deal with cannabis and cancer for several years and have found that although many participants are not well-informed, others have important questions and answers that can't be found elsewhere. Information found in these forums should not be taken as fact or qualified medical advice; they are rife with misinformation, but they present a unique opportunity to learn things that might not be found elsewhere.
Sometimes I participate and help as best I can, but answering all the questions in these forums would be a full-time job. I have also learned a lot from participating in these groups. For example, the seed for using multiple cultivars was planted in my brain when I heard Dr. Dedi Meiri speak to the Society of Cannabis Clinicians (SCC) in early 2017, but in these forums, there was evidence that patients were already combining multiple cultivars to make their cannabis oil long before Dr. Meiri’s research and presentation to the SCC.
While this list is not all-inclusive, I find these groups provide valuable and relevant information and choose to include them here because they have the potential to provide useful information on the following topics:
More information is provided in the book, The Cannabis Cancer Connection, and we advise ordering the book to provide context to these resources.
Facebook Groups has a handy search feature that allows the reader to access its archive of posts and comment threads, where discussions and potential solutions may be found. There is a little magnifying glass icon on the top right of the group’s page, simply click this and type in the keywords of the desired topic. This is the best way to use these groups.
Cannabis Oil Success Stories is a Facebook group with over 178,000 members started in 2012 by Jon Marsh, a respected and long-time cannabis advocate. Jon moderates this group along with five other moderators, including Pamela Javid Haymes, who usually makes meaningful contributions and provides insights not found elsewhere. Patients will often describe in great detail how they treated their cancer with cannabis and their results. I believe this group is one of the best sources of information on the Internet for real-life cannabis use in cancer treatment.
Threads about almost any type of cancer and patients' experiences, successes, and failures can be accessed using the Facebook Groups search feature.
C.K.C. is a Facebook group with over 40,000 members. Like Cannabis Oil Success Stories, this group has an incredible archive of threads to search.
This group was founded in 2019 and has over 3,800 members. Although it does not have the same depth of searchable threads as the previous two groups mentioned, it is a solid group and is growing quickly.
This Facebook group has over 62,000 members who use the Magical Butter Machine to make cannabis oil at home. There are a lot of valuable tips in this group on how to both infuse a carrier oil (like olive or coconut) with cannabinoids as well as extract cannabis with 190-proof ethyl alcohol to make FECO.
This Facebook group has over 16,000 members using the Source Turbo or the EtOH Pro to make cannabis extracts. Some of the most intelligent and innovative cannabis users I have encountered online are in this Facebook group. Troy Ivan, the founder of ExtractCraft and inventor of the Source Turbo and EtOH Pro, posts regularly and is a reliable and extremely knowledgeable contributor.
The mindset in this group is that short soaks must be used so as not to extract chlorophyll. Although this may be important for nonmedical purposes, such as creating extracts for dabbing, longer soaks are required for making cannabis oil to treat cancer.
This Facebook group has over 8,600 members using the Green Oil Machine (GOM) to make full extract cannabis oil (FECO) with 190-proof ethanol. Good tips can be found here but don’t be distracted by the radical political discussions that sometimes pop up.
This group has over 65,000 members, many of whom are experienced cannabis growers who can offer plenty of tips and techniques, along with helpful photos.
This group has over 135,000 members, and like Cannabis Growers Helping Growers, it has many experienced growers who are happy to share with other group members. Many posters seek solutions to their problems and post pictures of their ailing plants. The advice given is usually right on target.
This group has about 8,000 members who can provide invaluable information about growing autoflowering varieties, which produce flowers regardless of the season and finish quickly, making them an excellent option for home growers.
This group has over 77,000 members and was formed around Jane McLelland’s book How to Starve Cancer, which I believe is one of the best sources of information on how to use off-label drugs and supplements to treat cancer. As mentioned in other chapters, I do not recommend using antioxidants when using therapeutic levels of cannabinoids, and many of the off-label supplements mentioned have antioxidant activity. Check to see if any supplement has antioxidant activity by doing an online search for the name of the supplement and the word “antioxidant.” (See chapters: Off-Label Drugs that May Help Kill Cancer and Nutritional Supplements & Antioxidants).
This group has over 29,000 members, and the primary focus is on fenbendazole, an off-label drug not licensed for use in humans that appears to have significant antineoplastic activity. However, significant liver damage has also been reported.
I am not recommending the use of fenbendazole, but I provide this information for those patients who have failed in their attempt to halt the progress of their cancer and are desperately looking for other options that have proved effective for some cancer patients.
This group contains posts from patients who have combined fenbendazole with cannabis and other off-label drugs. The search function for this group may be restricted because when I searched for cannabis or cannabis oil, there were no results. A search for “oil” returned many posts with patients using cannabis oil. Searching for FECO was also successful.
SCC is a group of physicians and other professionals dedicated to using cannabis as medicine. They have an extensive online library with a wealth of articles on the use of cannabis in the treatment of many diseases, including cancer. I am a member of the board of directors and co-chair the library committee.
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) was formed in 1970 when “marijuana” was the commonly used term for cannabis. Their website is an excellent source for the latest information on state and federal cannabis laws, regulations, and reform efforts.
The mission of Americans for Safe Access is to ensure safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research. They have a section for patients that is loaded with helpful information.
The Cannabis Nurses Network™ is an international professional nursing organization that educates nurses on the science behind the cannabis plant and provides a global nursing network to support and empower nurses to help patients use cannabis.
O´Shaughnessy’s was created almost 20 years ago and initially chronicled the early developments of medical cannabis legalization in California. The name pays homage to William Brooke O´Shaughnessy, an Irish physician who validated cannabis as a medicine in India in the 19th century. My dear friend Fred Gardner created O’Shaughnessy's as a print newspaper, and it has since evolved into an online journal that he continues to produce and edit. It presents cannabis news that cannot be found elsewhere.
Healer was created by Dustin Sulak, DO, a board member of the SCC. There is a tremendous amount of excellent, free information here, including webinars, videos, and articles on almost every aspect of cannabis medicine. He does offer additional material for a fee. Check out his description of the endocannabinoid system (1, 2) and several articles related to essential cannabis medicine. Dr. Sulak is also the author of Handbook of Cannabis for Clinicians, which is my go-to reference for using cannabis in treating medical conditions beyond cancer. Dr. Sulak also did me the honor of writing the foreword for this book.
